Street dark or a line down? That's Vector or Counties Energy

Stay at least 10 metres from any fallen line and treat it as live. Call 111 if anyone's hurt or in danger, then the lines company: Vector on 0508 832 867 (0508 VECTOR), or Counties Energy on 0800 100 202 if you're in southern Papakura, Pukekohe, Waiuku or further south. Smoke, a burning smell or crackling at your switchboard? Don't touch it, and contact the lines company straight away.

What's different about electrical work in Auckland

Two lines companies, one city

Vector owns the lines that bring power to most Aucklanders, from Wellsford in the north to Papakura in the south. Counties Energy runs the far south, from southern Papakura to Mercer, with substations at Pukekohe and Waiuku among others. Close to the boundary between them? Electricity Networks Aotearoa's online lines company map shows which one serves your address.

Plenty of poles, and big storms

Vector says about 55% of its Auckland customers have underground lines in front of their property, so a lot of streets still rely on overhead wires. Cyclone Gabrielle, which began on 11 February 2023, caused outages on about a third of Vector's overhead network, mainly from trees, and affected more than 218,000 customers.

Villas, bungalows and the first state houses

Villas were common in early 20th century Auckland, and Californian bungalows took off in the 1920s. State housing began with a model estate at Ōrākei in 1937, followed by Meadowbank, Waterview and Mount Roskill. Unless they've been upgraded, homes of that age often still have rewireable fuses, few power points and no RCDs.

Special character streets

The Unitary Plan's Special Character Areas take in parts of Remuera, Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Herne Bay, Parnell, Epsom and other older suburbs. If you live in one, assume the wiring could be as old as the house until an electrician has tested it.

Growing fast, and growing south

The 2023 Census counted 611,895 dwellings in Auckland, up 11.9% since 2018. Counties Energy says growth on its lines is strongest in Pukekohe, Paerata, Drury, Karaka, Glenbrook and Pōkeno as the city spreads south.

Four in ten households rent

At the 2023 Census, 40.46% of Auckland households didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust. Rentals have to meet the healthy homes standards, and landlords and tenants can't do electrical work in a rental unless they're registered and licensed.

The jobs Auckland homes ask for most

Switchboards and rewiring in older homes. A villa or early state house that's never been rewired is the classic Auckland call. The usual starting point is a switchboard upgrade with RCDs, sometimes followed by rewiring when the old cable is past it.

Heating and ventilation for rentals. With so many renters, landlords keep asking for heat pump circuits and extractor fans that meet the healthy homes standards.

Solar and EV chargers. Since 11 May 2026, eligible single phase homes on Vector's lines can export up to 10 kW of solar under a limit Vector adjusts over the internet, if the inverter supports it. An EV charger in Auckland is worth planning at the same time, because both change what your board and supply have to carry.

New connections and bigger supplies. Infill townhouses and subdivisions need new or upgraded connections. Vector says connections work submitted from 16 October 2026 is likely to be scheduled in 2027, so get your electrician talking to Vector early.

Storm repairs. After a big blow, the line from the boundary to your house is usually the owner's to fix, not Vector's. Our Auckland emergency electrician page explains who fixes what.

If it were our Auckland house

We'd find out which lines company we're on first, and save its faults number in our phones before the next storm. If the house is a villa, bungalow or early state house and the board still has old fuses or no RCDs, we'd get that looked at before adding a heat pump, solar or a charger. And if a new connection or a bigger supply is on the cards, we'd start that conversation now, because Vector's connection work is already being booked into 2027.

Questions

Straight answers.

Which lines company is my Auckland home on?

Most of Auckland, from Wellsford to Papakura, is on Vector. The far south, from southern Papakura through Pukekohe and Waiuku to Mercer, is on Counties Energy. If you're near the line between them, Electricity Networks Aotearoa's lines company map shows the name and phone number for your address.

Who do I call when the power goes out in Auckland?

If the whole street is out, it's the lines company, not an electrician. Vector's online Outage Centre lets you check your address and report it, and its faults line is 0508 832 867. Counties Energy's is 0800 100 202. If only your house is off, check whether your main switch or an RCD has tripped first.

Do you have an electrician in my suburb?

Auckland's a big place, so tell us your suburb and the job. Where we have a licence-checked local electrician who does that work, we'll match you with them.
