Helensville, then and now
Built on timber
Helensville grew on the kauri timber industry and gum digging, and by 1870 it was the area's main trading centre and transport junction.
Special character
The Unitary Plan lists Helensville among its residential special character areas, alongside central suburbs like Mount Eden and Remuera.
On a flood plain
The town sits on what has traditionally been wetland and flood plain for the Kaipara River.
Gabrielle cut the water too
On 14 February 2023 Watercare said Cyclone Gabrielle had knocked out power, communications or access at the treatment plants serving Helensville, Muriwai and Wellsford, and asked people to cut their water use.
A small, settled town
Helensville had 1,182 dwellings in 2023. Across Rodney, 89.5% of homes are separate houses and 22.4% of households rent.
Old houses, old circuits
Many Helensville houses have been extended and rewired in pieces over a century. The board might be modern while a back room still runs on old cable. Signs to watch for: rewireable fuses, no RCDs, lights that flicker, power points that feel warm, or cable with rubber insulation. Our old wiring page goes through them.
In the special character area, changes to the outside of a house can need council approval. Inside rewiring generally doesn't, but ask before moving a meter board on the street side.
When the river comes up
Anything that's been under water needs testing before it goes back on. If you're renovating, think about mounting the board and outlets higher on flood-prone ground floors.
If it were our Helensville house
We'd ask for an inspection that traces every circuit to its end, not just a look at the board. In an old house that's been altered many times, that's how you find the one room still on original wiring.
