Pukekohe's power and houses
Counties Energy, not Vector
Counties Energy owns the network from southern Papakura to Mercer, with a substation at Pukekohe. Its outage line is 0800 100 202, or use its Outage Hub.
Trees bring the lines down
In Cyclone Gabrielle, Counties Energy crews restored power to 12,500 customers and worked on more than 1,000 faults, and most of the damage came from trees.
A post-war town
Pukekohe's population roughly doubled from 3,309 in 1945 to 6,547 in 1966. Plenty of those houses still stand, now with their third or fourth set of owners.
A lot more to come
Counties Energy expects 12,500 new dwellings in the Pukekohe-Paerata area over the next 30 years. The town already had 9,231 dwellings in 2023.
Mostly owned
In the Franklin board area, 87.8% of homes are separate houses and only 25.3% of households rent.
The work that comes up in and around Pukekohe
Post-war switchboards. Houses from the 1950s and 1960s often still have rewireable fuses or a board with no RCDs. A switchboard upgrade usually comes up when the owners add a heat pump or renovate the kitchen.
New connections and subdivisions. A new house, a minor dwelling or a bigger supply goes through Counties Energy, not Vector. Your electrician works with them on the application and the paperwork. See new connections.
Sheds and outbuildings. On bigger sections and lifestyle blocks, a supply to a shed or workshop is general work, so you should get a Certificate of Compliance and an Electrical Safety Certificate.
If we were building or buying in Pukekohe
We'd ring Counties Energy early about the connection, then get an electrician to plan the board around everything you'll want in five years, including an EV charger. In a growth area, the lines company's timing can matter as much as the builder's.
