Masterton and the Wairarapa

Powerco's Wairarapa network

Powerco supplies the Wairarapa from grid exit points at Masterton and Greytown. Its own description is of sheltered plains and hill country, where weather can be extreme on the coast and flooding can occur.

October 2025 gales

On 21 October 2025 severe gales brought trees down across lines and broke poles. More than 10,200 Powerco customers were without power earlier that day, crews found it unsafe to climb poles in the wind, and some customers waited overnight.

February 2026, and 2004

About 3,300 Wairarapa customers were still off at 4.30pm on 16 February 2026 after a storm. In the February 2004 storm, falling trees cut power to 600 Wairarapa homes and the Ruamahanga River had a 50-year flood.

Faults under the district

WREMO says the Wairarapa fault runs to the west of the district and last ruptured in 1855, in a magnitude 8.2 earthquake. Many Masterton buildings were badly damaged in the June 1942 Wairarapa earthquake.

A climate that works your heat pump hard

NIWA says East Taratahi, near Masterton, records on average 40 days a year above 25 °C and 33 days below freezing, far more extremes than coastal sites. A heat pump here earns its keep in both seasons.

That makes heat pump circuits, heated towel rails and switchboard capacity common jobs. If the board is old, with rewireable fuses or no RCDs, adding a heat pump is a good time to sort it. WorkSafe says new lighting and power point circuits from the board need RCD protection.

Trees, lines and your section

Falling trees were behind the outages in both the 2004 storm and the October 2025 gales. Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations, Powerco says the tree owner is usually responsible for keeping trees clear of lines. It may issue a hazard warning notice and then a cut or trim notice, it pays for a qualifying first cut, and anything within 4 metres of a line must be trimmed by an approved contractor.

On a lifestyle block, the overhead line from your boundary to the house is yours to maintain, Powerco says. If it's damaged, call an electrician, who arranges a temporary disconnection with an approved contractor so the repair can happen safely.

When a gale takes the power

  1. Check the outage map

Powerco's outage map shows known outages, with approximate areas and restoration times. Planned outages come by letter or email from your retailer.

  2. Report it to your retailer

Or on Powerco's website. If someone at home relies on medical equipment, contact your retailer immediately.

  3. Stay clear of fallen lines

Treat every line and pole as live and stay at least 10 metres away, about a bus length. Call 111 or 0800 27 27 27.

If it were our place

We'd get trees near the service line trimmed by an approved contractor before the next big blow, and we'd have a sparky check that the board can carry a heat pump running flat out in January and July. At the 2023 Census, 29.06% of Masterton District households didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust, so landlords: book that check before a tenant's first winter.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call when the power's out in Masterton?

Your electricity retailer, or report it on Powerco's website. Use Powerco's emergency number, 0800 27 27 27, for unsafe situations like fallen lines, and 111 if anyone's in danger.

A tree on my property is touching the lines. What do I do?

Don't trim it yourself. Anything within 4 metres of a line has to be trimmed by an approved contractor. Tell Powerco, and if it's your own service line, ask an electrician to arrange a disconnection first.

Has Powerco tried smart EV charging?

Yes. Its 2021 to 2023 trial put smart chargers in 80 EV drivers' homes and throttled charging at peak times. 93% of participants surveyed were satisfied with managed charging.
