Your region

Electricians in the Wellington regionFrom Kāpiti to the Wairarapa, with the wind and the faults.

The Wellington region has three lines companies: Wellington Electricity for the city, the Hutt Valley and Porirua, Electra on the Kāpiti Coast, and Powerco in the Wairarapa. A line down or a damaged pole goes to them. For anything inside your home, tell us the job and we'll match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of work.

Who to ring, and where

Wellington Electricity: Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Porirua

24 hour Electricity Emergency Line: 0800 248 148, for downed lines and damaged poles. For a power cut, check its outages page, then tell your retailer.

Electra: the Kāpiti Coast

Paekākāriki up to Ōtaki and beyond. Outages and faulty equipment: 0800 567 876.

Powerco: the Wairarapa

Masterton, Carterton and Greytown. Emergencies: 0800 27 27 27.

After an earthquake

WREMO says to turn the power off at the main switch if there are sparks, broken wires or electrical damage, but only if it's safe to reach it. Aftershocks can expose live wires, so stay clear and have a licensed electrician check before you switch back on. Burn marks or crackling at the switchboard: don't touch it, and ring your lines company.

Why your house might be the last one back on

Wellington Electricity fixes the outages affecting the most customers first, so single-property faults are typically repaired last. After the February 2026 storm, with Wellington's strongest winds since 2013 at 193 km/h, it restored about 21,000 customers and fixed more than 1,000 single-property faults. NZ Herald reported a Korokoro household still off five days later.

WREMO's advice while you wait: unplug major appliances to limit surge damage when the power comes back, skip the candles because of the fire risk, and treat any downed line as live. Wellington Electricity says to keep at least 10 metres away.

Where state housing started, and the character streets

New Zealand's first state housing went up in Petone in 1906, and the first state house of the 1930s programme was built at 12 Fife Lane, Miramar, in 1937. By 1977 Porirua had the country's largest single concentration of state houses. Wellington's character precincts protect pre-1930s homes on 86 hectares of the best-preserved streets.

In a house from any of those eras, find out what's behind the walls before a renovation closes them up again. An inspection tells you whether the old wiring can stay or needs a rewire.

EVs, solar and local pages

About 12,500 EVs were connected to Wellington Electricity's network at its last count, 2,400 more than a year earlier. Since 11 May 2026, small solar systems on its network have flexible export limits, and owners may be signalled to drop export to 5 kW when the local network is congested. Before an EV charger or solar goes in, ask your electrician to check with the lines company.

We have pages for Wellington and Masterton, plus Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua and the Kāpiti Coast. Whoever you use, the EWRB public register shows whether their licence is current and whether they've been disciplined in the last three years (how to check).

Where we'd start in Wellington

Save your lines company's number and find your main switch now, not in the dark after a shake. Then, in an older house on the hills, get the wiring looked at before the next renovation rather than during it.

Questions

Straight answers.

My neighbours have power back and I don't. Who do I call?

Wellington Electricity says to contact your retailer if you're still off after your neighbours are back on. If the fault turns out to be on your side of the boundary, like a damaged service main, that's a job for an electrician.

Who looks after the power pole on my section?

On Wellington Electricity's network, privately owned service poles are the landowner's responsibility, and so is the service main on your property. If a pole is found to be unsafe, a qualified electrical contractor of your choice can repair or replace it.
