Electricians in ŌtakiA river, a beach, and the expressway bringing newcomers.

Ōtaki is at the northern end of the Kāpiti Coast, normally fed from Transpower's Paraparaumu substation but able to switch to Mangahao near Shannon. With the expressway now bypassing the town, Electra expects the area to grow. Electrical jobs here range from flood checks near the river to looking after holiday homes at the beach and wiring new houses. Give us the details and we'll aim to match you with one licence-checked electrician from the area who knows that work.

Ōtaki's power in four points

Electra's lines, with a backup feed

Electra runs the local lines in Ōtaki; its outage and faulty equipment line is 0800 LOST POWER (0800 567 876). It finished a seismic upgrade of its Ōtaki substation in May 2022.

River and rain

WREMO lists floods from the Ōtaki and Waikanae rivers among Kāpiti's hazards. During the storms of late December 2025, properties along Ōtaki Gorge Road were warned they could be without power overnight.

Permanent and holiday homes at the beach

Ōtaki Beach, between the Ōtaki River and the Waitohu Stream, has a mix of permanent and holiday homes.

A small town, growing

Ōtaki had 3,771 people in 1,566 dwellings at the 2023 Census, up 21.7% in ten years, and 23.0% of residents were 65 or older. The expressway section from Peka Peka to Ōtaki opened in December 2022.

When the river is up

If water is coming into the house, switch off at the main switch only if you can do it standing somewhere dry. Never touch a switchboard or power point that's wet. Once the water's gone, keep the power off until an electrician has tested every circuit it reached.

What Ōtaki homes usually need

Testing after floods. Water in under-floor cables, power points or the meter board can cause faults long after it dries out.

Looking after a beach house. Long-life smoke alarms, outdoor fittings that suit salty air, and an RCD layout that won't leave the fridge off while you're away.

New homes and extensions. As the town grows, EV chargers and solar come up. Electra asks to be told before an EV charger goes in, so it can check capacity, and for solar of 10 kW or less your installer applies and waits for approval.

Older homes in town. Fuse boards, no RCDs and too few power points are the common fixes.

Our advice for Ōtaki

If you're near the river, we'd make sure the switchboard has RCDs and know exactly where the main switch is before the next flood warning. At the beach, we'd fit long-life smoke alarms and have an electrician sort the circuits so the essentials stay on when you're not there.

Questions

Straight answers.

Ōtaki's power went off but Paraparaumu's didn't. Why?

Local faults happen, and Ōtaki can be switched between two grid supplies when one has a problem. Check Electra's outage page or call 0800 567 876. If only your house is off, check your main switch first.

Do I need to tell Electra before fitting an EV charger in Ōtaki?

Electra asks home owners to let it know first, so it can check there's capacity in that part of its lines. Your electrician can make the contact for you.
