A bungalow town

Much of Timaru's 20th-century growth was wooden colonial-style bungalows on individual sections, alongside buildings in the local volcanic bluestone. A house that old may have had its wiring altered by several owners over the years.

In an older bungalow, the questions are usually the same. Is there still a fuse board with rewireable fuses? Are there RCDs (switches with a test button that cut the power if current leaks)? Is the old cable sound, and are there enough power points for how you live now? An electrician who rewires older homes can answer all four in one visit.

Timaru's lines company and weather

Alpine Energy

Alpine Energy serves most of South Canterbury, including the Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate districts, with 33,987 connection points. Timaru District Holdings, a council company, owns 47.5% of it.

The June 2006 snowstorm

About 30 cm of snow settled in Timaru, and on 21 June, 800 mid and south Canterbury homes went into their 10th day without power.

The 2021 floods

In the late May 2021 Canterbury floods, about 300 people were forced to leave their homes in Waimakariri and Timaru.

Who owns the poles

Alpine Energy owns all its 33 kV, 22 kV and 11 kV poles and lines, even on private land. Low voltage lines and poles that form part of your service mains on your own land are yours to look after.

Solar and EV charging on Alpine's network

From 1 May 2026 Alpine Energy raised its default residential solar export limit from 5 kW to 10 kW, and households exporting at 5 kW can apply to move up. Every new or changed residential export connection needs an application, and systems of 10 kW or less are processed within 10 business days.

EV chargers are quieter. Alpine's 2020 asset management plan said it had no way of knowing when a household installed one unless the owner asked for a fuse upgrade. So the check falls to you and your electrician: Gen Less says a wall charger needs a separate sub-circuit, a Type B RCD and a registered electrician, and your sparky can ask Alpine whether your supply is big enough.

A line down, damaged or hanging low

Alpine Energy says stay at least 10 metres away and keep others back, call 111 if there's immediate danger, then call 0800 66 11 77. Don't use its online fault form for emergencies. If a line falls on your car, stay inside if you can until it's made safe, and if you must get out, jump well clear with both feet together.

Renting in Timaru

At the 2023 Census, 25.47% of Timaru District households didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust. For a landlord with an older bungalow, the healthy homes heating standard, extractor fans and smoke alarms are the usual electrical jobs, and none of them can be done by the landlord or tenant unless they're licensed.

What we'd do in Timaru

In a bungalow, we'd book a wiring and switchboard check before the next renovation, not after a fuse blows. If an EV is coming, we'd ask the electrician to confirm the supply with Alpine Energy first, since Alpine may not otherwise know the charger is there.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who do I call in a Timaru power cut?

Check Alpine Energy's unplanned outage map, then call your retailer or Alpine Energy on 0800 66 11 77.

Who looks after the power pole on my Timaru section?

It depends on the pole. Alpine owns its 33 kV, 22 kV and 11 kV poles even on private land, but a low voltage pole that's part of your own service mains is yours.

Do I have to rewire my bungalow under the new wiring rules?

No. Under WorkSafe's guidance, a safe existing installation isn't on any deadline, and repairs can carry on. Rewire when the old cable is unsafe or can't cope with how you live.
