Electricians in Manawatū-WhanganuiFour lines companies, open plains and plenty of rentals.
Manawatū-Whanganui is split between four lines companies: Powerco around Palmerston North, Feilding and Whanganui, Electra in Horowhenua, Scanpower in northern Tararua and The Lines Company in Ruapehu. Outages and lines down go to them. For work inside your home, tell us the job and we'll match you with one licence-checked local electrician who does that kind of work.
Faults numbers, area by area
Powerco: Palmerston North, Feilding, Whanganui, Rangitīkei
0800 27 27 27 for fallen lines, leaning poles and anything else unsafe.
Electra: Levin, Foxton, Shannon
0800 567 876 (0800 LOST POWER). Before calling, Electra suggests checking the main switch is on. A blown fuse usually means the problem is inside the home and you need an electrician.
Scanpower: Dannevirke, Woodville, Norsewood
0800 80 80 39, or 111 if a life is in danger. Scanpower says to keep people and animals at least 10 metres from a fallen line.
The Lines Company: Taumarunui, Ohakune
Faults: 0800 367 328.
The February 2026 storm, and your service line
On 15 February 2026 a storm tore through Whanganui-Rangitīkei, Manawatū-Tararua and Wairarapa. More than 25,000 properties on Powerco's network lost power, and more than 500 lines came down, against an average of about 20 a week. At Himatangi, crews said there were hardly any poles still standing.
Storms like that bring down service lines as well. In a June 2022 storm, about 310 of Powerco's remaining outages were low voltage faults, such as service lines blown down. Powerco says the line from your boundary to the house is yours, so once the area is safe, repairing it is an electrician's job. If a line is on the ground, call 111 and keep well back.
Bungalow precincts and new subdivisions
Whanganui's district plan protects a Californian bungalow precinct on Godwin Crescent and Grey Street, railway cottages on Anzac Parade, and a run of bay villas. In homes that old, have the wiring and switchboard checked before you add anything big (rewiring).
New homes are coming too. Palmerston North rezoned Aokautere for up to 1,000 homes, and Levin's Taraika growth area is planned for about 2,500. On Electra's network a standard supply is single phase up to 63A or three phase up to 40A per phase, and Electra asks to be told before an EV charger goes in so it can check capacity.
A region of renters
At the 2023 Census, 35.85% of Palmerston North households didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust. Every rental has to meet the healthy homes standards, which include a fixed heater for the main living room and extractor fans of a set size in kitchens and bathrooms. Landlords can't do that electrical work themselves unless they're licensed (healthy homes electrical work).

If it were our house
In an older Whanganui or Palmerston North home, we'd get the switchboard and wiring checked before winter heating goes in. Landlords, sort the extractor fans and heater now, and keep the installer's details in writing for your compliance statement.

Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.

Questions
Straight answers.
Is Foxton on Powerco or Electra?
Electra. Its lines run from Paekākāriki in the south to Tokomaru and Foxton in the north, so Levin, Shannon and Foxton report faults to 0800 567 876.
A tree is growing into the line to my house. What do I do?
Trees near your own service line are your responsibility. On Electra's network you can book a safety disconnection at least 3 working days ahead so the tree can be cut safely. Elsewhere, ask your lines company how it handles it.
