What to have ready
- Your licence ID, card or digital, for you and anyone else who'll do the work. It shows the photo, registration class and number, and expiry date.
- Your NZBN and the trading name homeowners will see.
- A current public liability insurance certificate.
- The postcodes you're happy to travel to.
- Each kind of job you want, and something to show for it: a recent job, photos, or a review that names the work.
Which registration counts
Your class of registration sets out the work you're licensed to do, and we match jobs to it. Classes include Electrician, Electrical Inspector, Electrical Installer and Electrical Service Technician.
If you're an Electrical Inspector too, say so. High-risk work needs an independent inspection by a licensed electrical inspector, and only a licensed electrical inspector can test and connect wiring a homeowner has put in themselves.
Some specialist work now needs an endorsed class on top. From 1 September 2026, from your next renewal, that applies to hazardous areas, mining operations, medical cardiac protected areas and mains parallel generation systems. If your work touches any of those, tell us about the endorsement.
Working under someone else's Employer Licence? Tell us how. The EWRB says people on contracts for service can't work under an Employer Licence.
What happens after you apply
We check the register
Your registration class and current practising licence, and those of anyone else doing the work, on the EWRB public register.
We check the paperwork
That your insurance is current and your NZBN belongs to the business you've named.
We look at your work
The evidence for each kind of job. A job type with nothing behind it won't be matched to you.
We go through the terms
Price, areas and contract are set out in writing in your agreement, before you take any job.
You hear back either way
If it's a no, we'll say why and what would change it.
Who isn't a fit
Anyone without a current practising licence, or whose class doesn't cover the jobs they're after. Also anyone who wants every kind of job across a whole region: we match specialists, so a long list of job types with no evidence won't bring you much.
