Mosgiel, as the wiring sees it
Flood-prone plain
Otago Regional Council found flood peaks on the Silver Stream, which runs through the north of Mosgiel, got bigger and more frequent from 2006 to 2015. On 22 July 2017 it reported rock and sandbags holding back water threatening the stopbank at the Mill Creek subdivision. In early July 2026 up to 160 mm of rain flooded roads around Dunedin and the Taieri Plain.
Aurora Energy's lines
Mosgiel is on Aurora Energy, not OtagoNet. Aurora's 24/7 faults line is 0800 22 00 05. The Commerce Commission said the core of Aurora's network was mostly built in the 1950s and 1960s.
You may own more of the line than you think
Aurora says property owners are responsible for the service line from where it crosses their boundary, including low voltage lines and poles on their land, and recommends having them inspected every five years.
An older town with new edges
Mosgiel had 5,805 households at the 2018 census, with 29.3% of people aged 65 or older, and several retirement villages nearby. Newer streets include Kinmont Park at the foot of Saddle Hill. Across Dunedin City, 31.85% of households didn't own their home.
Common jobs in Mosgiel homes
Heat pump circuits. Aurora says you must apply to it before installing notifiable loads such as heat pumps, EV charging or generators, as well as before replacing mains. Your electrician can tell you whether yours counts and help with the application.
Board upgrades in older homes. Fuses, no RCDs and no room for a heating circuit are the usual signs. A higher-capacity board is high-risk work, so it's inspected independently.
Checks after flooding. Water in underfloor cables, power points or the meter board can cause faults later. Leave it off until an electrician has tested it.
Solar. Since 1 August 2025, single phase homes on Aurora's lines can export up to 10 kW of solar, depending on what the local lines can take.
What we'd do in Mosgiel
Before winter, we'd get the switchboard and heating circuits checked, and sort the Aurora application if a new heat pump is going in. If the property has its own poles or overhead line, we'd follow Aurora's advice and have them inspected too.
Want a specialist to sort it?
Tell us the job and your postcode. We match the licence-checked local electrician who does this kind of work, and they call you. No ring-around, and your number goes to them alone.
