What's different about Whangārei
Northpower runs the lines
Northpower's network serves Whangārei and Kaipara. Unlike some lines companies, it asks you to report a power cut to Northpower itself, as the network owner, rather than your retailer. Check your address on its online Outage Centre first, then ring 0800 10 40 40.
The day Northland went dark
On 20 June 2024 a Transpower tower fell near Glorit while a second circuit into Northland was out for maintenance. Northpower said 65,000 of the properties it supplies were affected, and with about a third of the power it needed, it switched off hot water and planned rolling outages.
Storm history
At 4pm on 13 February 2023, during Cyclone Gabrielle, about 15,500 Northpower customers had no power. In July 2008 a rapidly deepening low brought gusts over 130 km/h, cut power to about 25,000 Northland homes and flooded Whangārei's CBD.
Homes from the 1960s boom
Whangārei grew rapidly in the 1960s, taking in Kamo and other outlying areas, and the district added 3,087 dwellings between 2018 and 2023. Older boards from that era can still have rewireable fuses and no RCDs, while the newer homes tend to want solar or a charger.
Backup power is a real Whangārei job
Northpower doesn't supply generators to homes, and its own outage advice suggests a local electrician can help with backup. After 2024, that's a common ask here.
The safe way is an inlet and a changeover switch on the switchboard, fitted by a licensed electrician, so a portable generator runs the circuits you choose and can't feed power back into Northpower's lines. Never run a generator into a power point with a homemade lead. It can electrocute a line worker down the street.
Solar, new builds and houses that have sat empty
Solar on Northpower's network needs an approved Alternative Energy Connection application before it's installed. In October 2025 Northpower doubled the export limit for single phase connections from 5 kW to 10 kW, though approval can still come with an export limit or set inverter settings. Solar PV is high-risk work, so a licensed electrical inspector checks it and issues a Record of Inspection.
New connections start with an online application. Your electrician builds and certifies the service main, a Northpower-approved contractor inspects and livens it, and your retailer arranges the meter.
Long-empty houses catch people out. If the power at a property has been off for six months or more, Northpower needs an inspection and a Certificate of Verification before it reconnects. Worth knowing if you've bought a place that sat vacant.
Power off at your place? Work through this
Look at your own switchboard
If only your home is out and a breaker or RCD (the switch with a test button) has dropped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call an electrician.
Check Northpower's Outage Centre
It shows planned and unplanned outages by address. If your street is listed, there's nothing an electrician can do from inside your house.
Ring Northpower on 0800 10 40 40
Not listed? Report it. Burn marks, a strange smell or crackling at your switchboard also go straight to the lines company, and nobody should touch the board.
A line on the ground means 111
Treat it as live, keep everyone at least 10 metres back, and call 111. Then let Northpower know on its faults line.
Rentals in Whangārei
At the 2023 Census, 29.57% of households in Whangārei District didn't own their home or hold it in a family trust. For landlords, the electrical side of the healthy homes standards is mostly a fixed heater for the main living room and extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom.
Landlords and tenants can't do electrical work in a rental at all unless they're registered and hold a current practising licence, so every rental job here is one for a licensed electrician.
If it were our house
We'd get a generator inlet sorted in a calm week, not during the next outage, and we'd ask the same sparky to look over an older board while they're there. If solar is on your list, let the electrician lodge Northpower's application before you sign for panels. And keep 0800 10 40 40 on the fridge.

Questions
Straight answers.
Who do I call when the power goes out in Whangārei?
Northpower, on 0800 10 40 40, after checking its Outage Centre. Northpower asks people to report outages to it as the network owner. Call 111 first if there's fire, someone's hurt or a line is down.
Can an electrician connect a generator to my Whangārei house?
Yes. A licensed electrician can fit an inlet and changeover switch so a portable generator powers chosen circuits safely. That work touches the switchboard, so it's never a job for the homeowner.
What's Northpower's solar export limit?
Northpower announced on 10 October 2025 that it was doubling the single phase export limit from 5 kW to 10 kW. You still need its approval before the system is installed, and conditions can apply.
How do I check a Whangārei electrician is licensed?
Ask to see their licence ID and check the photo and expiry date. Then search their name on the EWRB (Electrical Workers Registration Board) public register to confirm the licence is current and hasn't been suspended.
