Electricians in WaikatoFive lines companies, from Raglan's storms to Taupō's baches.

The Waikato's power comes through five different lines companies, so the right faults number depends on where you live. WEL Networks has Hamilton and the towns around it, Waipā Networks has Cambridge and Te Awamutu, and Powerco, The Lines Company and Unison share the rest. For work inside your home, we match you with one licence-checked electrician in the Waikato who does that kind of job.

Find your lines company

WEL Networks: Hamilton, Huntly, Raglan, Ngāruawāhia

Outages and faults, 24/7: 0800 800 935. Its outage map refreshes every minute.

Waipā Networks: Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Pirongia, Kāwhia

Fault line 0800 800 769, 24/7. Before you ring, it suggests checking your own fuses or breakers and whether the neighbours are out too.

Powerco: Coromandel, Hauraki, Matamata, Morrinsville, Tokoroa

Emergency line 0800 27 27 27 for fallen lines and anything unsafe. For an ordinary power cut, Powerco asks you to tell your retailer.

The Lines Company: King Country and the Central Plateau

Te Kūiti, Ōtorohanga, Mangakino and Tūrangi. Faults: 0800 367 328.

Unison: Taupō

For a power or hot water cut in Taupō, your retailer is the first call. For a fallen line, ring 111, then Unison on 0800 2 86476 (0800 2 UNISON).

Storms, trees and your own service line

Fallen trees bring most lines down here. In one storm WEL counted 27 unplanned outages affecting about 17,500 customers, and Raglan was hit hardest, with over 3,000 off. WEL has since rebuilt the Te Uku substation to improve supply to Raglan. Waipā Networks' February 2026 storm cut around 1,300 customers, almost all back within 24 hours.

If a storm takes out the line from the road to your house, that line is usually yours. WEL says the property owner organises repairs to a private service line, and only qualified people may work on or near it. Keep at least 10 metres from any line on the ground and call 111 first.

Hamilton's new suburbs, and a lot of empty holiday homes

Hamilton City Council says the city needs at least 18,000 new homes by 2035, with Peacocke the third big greenfield area after Rototuna and Rotokauri. Building, or adding a bigger supply for an EV charger or three-phase power? WEL says to allow 12 to 16 weeks just for the quote on an increase in load.

Around the lake and the coast it's holiday homes. On 2023 Census night, 30.4% of private dwellings in Taupō District were empty, and Powerco warns that Whitianga can now lose power at peak times like Christmas and Easter. A bach that sits empty half the year is worth an electrical inspection and a check of its smoke alarms.

Near Taupō, At BRANZ's Taupō Airport test site, south of the Wairākei geothermal field, copper corroded at least one category worse than the standard corrosion map shows. Exposed outdoor fittings there are worth a look when an electrician is on site.

Local pages, and the date everyone's asking about

We have pages for Hamilton and Taupō, plus Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Raglan, Huntly, Matamata and Morrinsville.

New wiring rules apply from 12 November 2026, but WorkSafe says existing installations can keep being used and repaired as long as they aren't unsafe. Nobody needs a rewire because of the date. Whatever the job, ask for the right paperwork (certificates explained).

If it were our place in the Waikato

Work out which of the five lines companies you're on and save the number. Then fix what's most likely to bite: in an older house that's usually the switchboard, and at a bach it's wiring nobody has looked at for years.

Questions

Straight answers.

Who owns the power pole on my farm?

It might be you. The Lines Company's records show about 7,000 privately owned poles on its network. If a pole or line on your land feeds only your place, ask your lines company whether it's yours, because the owner looks after it.

Is Pōkeno on WEL?

No. The far north of the Waikato, around Pōkeno and Tuakau, is on Counties Energy, whose faults line is 0800 100 202. If you're unsure, the ENA lines company map shows yours by address.
