Network Tasman, from the CBD to the valleys
Where your side starts
The network connection point, usually marked by the service fuses, is where responsibility passes to you. Mains or service lines inside your boundary are yours to maintain and replace.
Central Nelson
The former Nelson Electricity area, from the Port and the CBD to the Brook, the Maitai and Toi Toi Valley, is about 90% underground. Much of that cable was laid in the 1960s and 1970s.
Rural Tasman
Around Motueka, rural areas mostly hang off single overhead lines with very limited backup, so a slip or a fallen tree can mean a long wait for power.
A rough run of weather
Network Tasman counted five extreme weather events in 2025/26: winds at Kohatu and Glenhope, floods in the Wakefield and Motueka valleys, floods and gales across Tasman, winds from Murchison to the upper Motueka valley, and then winds in Stoke and Nelson. On Douglas Road near the Motueka River, floodwater washed away five power poles and 12 households waited about five days for power.
The whole Stoke supply region, Nelson to Richmond, relies on one Transpower grid exit point. When a national grid fault hit on 23 October 2025, outages spread across the entire Nelson and Tasman network and Nelson Hospital ran on generator power.
If a line comes down, keep yourself and others well away and call 111, then Network Tasman. If floodwater got into the house, leave those circuits off until a licensed electrician has checked them.
Solar country, with a process to follow
NIWA puts Nelson's sunshine at 2,472 hours a year, and Network Tasman says solar uptake there is high, with about 3,800 mostly domestic sites. For a system of 10 kW or less, it recommends you don't buy anything until your application is approved, and it decides within 10 business days. No exporting until generation metering and the final inspection are done.
It has also set standard settings for home battery inverters, so batteries don't all recharge at peak times or at once after a long cut.
Growth, older streets and your local page
Tasman District Council's Richmond South project aims for around 2000 new homes, and Network Tasman expects more subdivisions in the Marsden, Ngawhatu and Maitai valleys, plus holiday homes around Kaiteriteri and Marahau. Building is the time to ask for spare switchboard space. Before an EV charger goes in, ask your electrician to check capacity with Network Tasman.
We have pages for Nelson, Richmond and Motueka. The EWRB warns that insurance can be affected when electrical work isn't done and certified by a licensed electrical worker, so check the licence and keep your certificates (certificates explained).
Our take for Nelson Tasman
Up a rural valley, plan for the next outage being a long one. Thinking about solar? Get the application approved before you sign for panels, and make sure the quote covers the inspection and paperwork.
