All that sun, and the rules for using it
NIWA puts Blenheim's average sunshine at 2,475 hours a year, the highest of any New Zealand town or city. That makes solar, and often a battery, worth a serious look here.
Marlborough Lines needs a connection application before solar, a battery or other generation is installed or upgraded, and recommends your electrician or consultant completes it. From 11 May 2026 its default export limit for homes and small solar is 10 kW, but 5 kW in congestion-managed areas and 2 kW on single wire earth return (SWER) lines. Inverters have to comply with AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 and the installation with AS/NZS 4777.1:2024.
Solar PV is high-risk prescribed electrical work. That means a Certificate of Compliance, an inspection by a licensed electrical inspector who issues a Record of Inspection, and an Electrical Safety Certificate. You may need a new meter too, arranged through your retailer.
Marlborough's network and ground
One way in from the grid
Marlborough Lines takes its power from the national grid at a single grid exit point near Springlands, then through 16 zone substations. On 23 October 2025, as strong winds hit the country, more than 20,000 of its customers lost power that morning.
A fault on the doorstep
Blenheim lies within 5 km of the Wairau Fault, and the town feels several, usually small, earthquakes each year. The magnitude 6.6 quake near Seddon on 16 August 2013 cut power to about 4,000 Marlborough properties, all back on by the next afternoon.
The 2021 flood
A state of emergency was declared on 19 July 2021 when about 900 people from 500 properties were evacuated, including in Renwick, Spring Creek and Tuamarina.
A growing town
Blenheim grew from 25,242 people in 2013 to 28,788 in 2023, with 11,583 dwellings at the last Census.
New connections and alterations
Every Marlborough Lines request, from a new connection to decommissioning an old one, goes through one online form, with your electrician supplying the fuse and phase details. Standard connections take about 4 to 6 weeks to livening, complex ones about 16 to 24 weeks.
Only an approved contractor can connect and liven, nothing is livened until it's certified and inspected, and the installing electrician is responsible for getting the work inspected. Bought a place that's been disconnected for more than six months? Marlborough Lines needs a Certificate of Verification before it goes back on.
Lines down in Marlborough
Treat every line as live and keep people and animals at least 10 metres away. Call 03 577 7007 or 111. If a line comes down on your vehicle, stay inside, or jump clear with your feet together and shuffle at least 10 metres away.
Where we'd start in Blenheim
Before buying panels, we'd ask the electrician which export limit applies at your address, because a SWER line or a congestion-managed street changes the right system size. If you're out towards Renwick or Spring Creek, we'd also keep the board and power points well clear of where floodwater reached in 2021.

Questions
Straight answers.
How do I report a power fault in Blenheim?
Urgent faults (no power, part power, lines down, branches on lines) go to Marlborough Lines on 03 577 7007, 24/7. Check your main switchboard first. Non-urgent faults use its online form, watched Monday to Friday.
Can I trim a tree near the power lines myself?
Not if you'd come within 4 metres of a line. Marlborough Lines says nobody may do that without a Close Approach Permit. Tree owners are generally responsible for keeping trees clear, and Marlborough Lines pays for a qualifying first cut or trim.
Who tells me about planned outages?
Your electricity retailer, Marlborough Lines says. If anyone in the house relies on medical equipment, tell your power company, and check the live outage map when the power goes.
